Voting 101: What You Need to Know

Voting is your constitutional right as a United States citizen. It is your chance to have a say in what happens with your local and national government. Some may say that one vote doesn't change anything, but that's not true. We all saw the ramifications of that attitude in the 2024 election!


Here are a few facts that all voters should know before going to the polls.


Who can vote in Iowa?

In general, U.S. citizens 18 and older who reside in Iowa are eligible to vote. For special situations (such as military veterans serving overseas, people who have been convicted of a felony, and college students from out-of-state who attend school in Iowa), visit the Secretary of State's website for explanations.


How do I know if I am registered?

You might not be registered to vote if you have moved recently. Or, if you haven't voted in recent elections, you may have been purged from the rolls and will need to re-register.

That is a personal decision. You should research each candidate you are eligible to vote for and decide for yourself. Do not let anyone pressure you into voting a certain way. But do cast your vote - every vote matters! Preview the ballot and learn about the candidates.
