Welcome to IA State Legislation Watch!
This a new series where volunteers are attempting to keep an eye on newly proposed pieces of legislation and how it may impact our communities.
On each of these updates, we hope to share items we find concerning, why we find them concerning, and links directly to the item on the Iowa state legislative website for more information, as well as the sponsors of that legislation.
This document gives an overview of the Governor’s FY 2027 budget recommendations. This will be the starting point for budget subcommittee bills. The budget subcommittees will be working for the next 6 weeks or so reviewing funding.
The budget is divided into the following subcommittee areas:
Later in the Session, legislative leadership will develop a spending target for each of these budget areas.
There will also be a separate appropriations bill to address standing appropriations (These are annual Code of Iowa appropriations that remain the same every year unless addressed by legislation).
Actions you can take:
Familiarize yourself with the funding recommended by the Governor.
Appropriation bills will not appear until much later in the Legislative Session. The links for the subcommittees navigate to their focused website, where you can look at committee information including upcoming meetings and agendas. If you have focus areas you care strongly about, bookmark and check weekly!
