You may have heard of Indivisible or seen us at community events. Or this might be your first encounter with our civic organization. Either way, you might be thinking, “Who are these people and what do they stand for?”
We’re a mixed bag of people from different backgrounds, experiences, and cultures with passions that are just as diverse. The TL/DR version is that we are a civic group whose members believe in the power of democracy and freedom for everyone.
Here’s a quick history of our Indivisible chapter and an overview of the activities our members have been involved with over the years.
The Chapter's History
Indivisible’s national chapter was founded during the first Trump administration to build a democracy that reflects the breadth and diversity of the U.S. that works for and is sustained by everyone.
From there, local chapters sprang up across the U.S. The Linn County Metro chapter is currently led by Cindy Garlock and subcommittee group leaders focused on particular issues and activities.
Our Focus Areas in Recent Years
Over the years, we’ve both expanded and narrowed our fields of focus based on the needs of the community and passions of our members. Here are some of the recent areas we’ve focused our energy in recent years.
Voter Registration
Of all the causes we’ve embraced, this has been the longest-standing focal area of the Linn County Metro chapter. While Indivisible is a nonpartisan organization, we encourage all Americans who are eligible to vote to do so at the local, regional, and national levels.
We have seen the power that emerges when Americans use their voices–it was evident in winter 2025, when historically red local government seats began to turn blue across the U.S.
Despite allegations of voter interference and downright fraud at the highest levels of our government, Indivisible still believes in the right–no, the responsibility–of voters to unite and make our voices heard.
Throughout the year, we take voter education to the people. At community events and through door-knocking efforts, we teach our neighbors how to:
Check whether they are registered to vote
Learn how to register or update their registration
Locate their community’s polling place
Find out who their elected officials are
Learn what elections and decisions are coming up for vote

Support Our Marginalized Neighbors
The Trump administration’s push to demolish DEI, community aid, health and wellness safety nets, and terrorize people of color and LGBTQ+ individuals has left many Iowans fearful of living in the communities they’ve called home for decades.
Linn County Metro task forces led initiatives to increase visibility of these hate-filled initiatives while showing out in solidarity for our neighbors. Some of the efforts we joined or led in 2025 included:
Partnership with existing local organizations including Marion Alliance for Racial Equity (MARE), Escucha Mi Voz, and Iowa City Catholic Worker House to educate ourselves on immigrant rights and safe advocacy
Attend ICE check-in accompaniments in Cedar Rapids and Iowa City
March in the CRPride parade and Linn Mar High School homecoming parade in support of LGBTQ+ Iowans
No Kings, Dump Trump Tuesday, and Visibility Brigade protests to defy unethical practices by the administration
Postcard writing and elected official office visits to peacefully voice our disapproval for how our neighbors are being treated

Community Wellness
Well before the government shutdown, this administration’s harmful socioeconomic practices were driving up prices for household staples such as groceries and clothing. Linn County Metro teams collaborated with local civic groups to help gather supplies and raise awareness about poverty in our neighborhoods.
Some of these initiatives included:
Joining the Cedar Rapids/Marion Crop Hunger Walk to raise money for food security.
Ongoing personal hygiene items and shelf-stable food drives for local community pantries, supporting local nonprofits such as Catherine McAuley Center, where some of our members also tutor immigrants in learning English.
Winter apparel drives to collect blankets and clothing for the unhoused.

Something for Everyone!
Indivisible Linn County Metro is a vibrant community where anyone with a passion for democracy can find a niche. In this group, you’ll have the support of a wealth of experienced peaceful protestors and advocates to turn your ideas into reality.
